Meaningful work for important clients. Really.

Our Summer Associate Program provides realistic, hands-on experience within Groom’s unique culture. This means meaningful assignments, in which you will work side-by-side with some of the best attorneys in the nation in our field on matters and issues with real-world applications.

It also means extensive feedback. Summer associates receive ongoing guidance and mentorship from attorneys at all levels, both formally and informally. Along with helping you get to know us, we also want to get to know you, which means ample social events.

We are all about communication and respect, and creating a culture where people can learn, grow, and excel in their work.

Epicenter of Benefits, Health, and Retirement Law

We are the preeminent employee benefits firm in the country, offering clients a depth of benefits, health, and retirement expertise and litigation know-how not found at any other law firm. You will work with a small, elite group of thought leaders and renowned authorities in our field. Your colleagues have practices that encompass all the major benefits, health, and retirement laws impacting a broad spectrum of industries. You will have the opportunity to learn from the best, with extensive, hands-on work with attorneys across all practice areas.

Meaningful Work

The most important thing about a summer associate program is, of course, the work. At Groom, that means significant assignments for important clients. Groom attorneys continue to help shape ERISA and related fiduciary, health, and tax laws, and continue to work on high-stakes benefits questions and litigation for high profile clients, materially affecting the lives and well-being of countless people. Summer associates share in the same pool of work as our regular associates — not make-work.

We also know that training and mentorship are an important part of a great summer program. We assign each summer associate an individual mentor to show them the ropes, answer questions, and ensure they get traction right away.

How and Where You’ll Work

Groom is in the heart of D.C, in the midst of a cosmopolitan and energetic neighborhood with countless amenities and opportunities. D.C. is a truly international city, with cultural, dining and other activities, and we are right in the center of it all.  We are on Pennsylvania Avenue, next to the White House, with views of Capitol Hill and Washington landmarks, and within walking distance of the National Mall, museums and the Metro.

All of Groom works together out of our one office location. You will work next to attorneys of all seniority, and have exposure to everyone, not just a handful of attorneys in your specialty area. Depending on your situation, there are also opportunities for hybrid work.

Campus Interview Schedule

Our interviewing attorneys, in coordination with our Recruiting Committee, visit schools across the nation, both virtually and in person. On-campus interviews typically take place in late July and August, depending on law schools’ schedules. In the past, we have interviewed at Duke Law, Georgetown Law, GW Law, Howard Law, Penn Law, and UVA Law, and received resumé collections from many other schools. We welcome applications from students in law schools across the country who are genuinely interested in working with us in this area of the law.

How & When to Apply

Please contact us at recruiting@groom.com to submit your application, or if you have any questions. Candidates are encouraged to send a resume, transcript, and writing sample. Typically, we begin collecting application materials in the summer.
