Groom mourns the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Ian Lanoff, on September 29, 2024.
Ian had a long and prolific career in both public service and private practice. As Administrator for Pension and Welfare Benefit Programs at the Department of Labor during the Carter Administration, Ian played an important role in the implementation of ERISA, and his work laid the foundation for decades of jurisprudence. Ian also represented some of the nation’s largest public and private benefit programs, helping to protect the benefits for millions of workers and retirees. Ian leaves behind a truly remarkable professional legacy.
Ian will be remembered for not only his professional achievements but also the positive impact he had on the lives of his family, friends, and colleagues. Ian had a strong moral compass and never lost sight of what is important in life. He was generous with his time and never hesitated to help friends and colleagues. Ian was particularly well-known for his commitment to mentoring young people, including many attorneys at Groom and elsewhere. We will miss Ian’s kindness, generosity, and sense of humor.
We offer Ian’s family our deepest condolences. May his memory forever be a blessing.
